Fort Smith in the news

Those are the old barracks at Fort Chaffee. Last count, 12 were burned completely down thanks to a wind-driven fire.

The area is under something called a "Wind Advisory," which I'd never heard of except in relation to "area lakes and waterways." It's been blowing at a steady 40 mph most of the day, with gusts up to 50.

Fire crews have given up trying to contain the fire, which is now a major grass fire on the Chaffee property.

Closer to home, the wooden privacy fence owned by our across-the-street neighbor has toppled. Some branches are down. I've not looked to see if any shingles have blown off our roof.

It's trash day in our neighborhood. The cans and most of the contents are everywhere. Our storage shed tried to take flight and I swear Toto flew past my bathroom window this morning.

I could smell something burning on the way to lunch today on Rogers. That's really too bad about Chaffee...

But is the 'Cuda OK!?!

oh yeah, safely tucked away... Jason stressed about the leaves that blew in the garage though. How dare those leaves sit there like litter under the cuda's tires!

So I went to cover a basketball game last night and the ticket taker stops me to chat about the weather ("Is the wind still blowing?" ... "Look at my hair. What do you think?") Anyway, I mention that my friend posted pictures of a fire that was raging because of the wind and somewhere in there dropped the word "Chaffee". He responds, "Oh, I know where that is ... armpit of the world." But he added he didn't like the bases in Texas or Georgia either.
